But when it comes to building a strong online presence as an author, the simplicity stops there.

In order to stay relevant and at the tops of your followers, fans and friends’ newsfeeds, it’s a good idea to do six primary things.

Pillar #1: Give More Than You Get

This is a concept that most authors don’t understand or do but don’t implement (to their peril).

Why? Probably because it takes a lot of work, time and forethought.

The idea here is that social media audiences don’t want to engage with ads all the time. They want to engage with content that entertains and delights them. That they find interesting.

If you’re saying, "Buy my book, buy my book" all the time, they're going to tune you out.

You need to GIVE them wonderful content, information, free stuff and cool stories.

My rule of thumb is to give 10-20 pieces of free content and valuable information for every 1 request I make.

In today’s world, social media users are constantly inundated with photos, videos, content…

Which means simply updating your Facebook status once a week just isn’t going to cut it…

In order to stay relevant and at the top of your friends, fans and followers' newsfeeds, you need to constantly generate compelling content about your projects.

For example, a best practice for the frequency of posting on twitter is 5 times per day between the hours of 12 pm and 6 pm to get the most likes, retweets and new followers.

On Facebook, posting 1-2 times per day, 7 days a week between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm will garner you the most follower engagement on your posts like comments, photo likes, page likes, etc.

It requires a lot of time to create posts on a frequent and ongoing basis. Especially quality posts.

Pillar #3: Unify Your Messaging & Brand

Putting out a cohesive message to your audience across all platforms is necessary when attracting new followers as well as keeping the ones you have.

When someone visits your page for the first time and they like the content you’re putting out, they’ll follow you…

However, if you suddenly switch direction on your message and post something that has nothing to do with your brand, you risk losing followers…
