From Rejection To “YES!”:

The 3-Step ‘StoryCraft Method’ Successful
Writers Use To Go From Amateur To Professional

Are you an “I almost...” novelist or screenwriter? Meaning you’ve…

...Almost completed your story?

…Almost gotten a publishing deal?

…Almost landed a lit agent?

…Almost sold a script?

…Almost landed a critical pitch meeting?

Or maybe you’re just getting started with your book or script and you’ve heard how challenging the publishing industry has become.

Or that it’s harder than ever to break into the entertainment industry. But you know you’ve got an incredible story to share, right? But you’re tired of putting your idea out into the world with the inevitable rejections, doors slamming in your face, and query letters never responded to?

Or worse, you haven’t even tried yet!

In the dog-eat-dog publishing and entertainment industries, there is no second place.

With over 1 million new books entering the market each year, and an estimated 100,000 new screenplays, your story must stand out.

The good news is that if it does, then doors will start opening up for you.

Readers will flock to buy your book (and you’ll get the reviews your story deserves)…

Producers will read your script and start taking meetings and connecting you with important decision-making executives…

And agents/publishers will start calling YOU!

It’s amazing what happens the moment you knock your story out of the park.

You literally become the darling of the marketplace, as if you’re Dorothy (sorry, guys) with ruby red slippers that all of a sudden take you exactly where you want to go.

The bad news is that ‘knocking your story out of the park’ ain’t easy.

The yellow brick road is paved with the blood, sweat and tears of hundreds of thousands of writers who’ve tried and never gotten their story ‘all the way there’.

So what sets apart the professionals from the amateurs?

The Unfair Advantage Successful
And ‘Well-To-Do’ Writers Have

If you’re reading this letter, chances are that you’re a little bit older and coming to writing from a completely different career. And you didn’t go to college or film school for writing.

Or maybe you’re younger, but going to film school or getting a creative degree wasn’t exactly in the ‘financial’ cards.

Or maybe you believe the myth that hard work or education shouldn’t be required and that only a “chosen few” have a god-given writing talent.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Just ask these writing moguls who sought to further their education…

jkrowling1JK Rowling (HARRY POTTER) attended the University of Exeter in the UK where she learned to craft interesting characters and stories. After college, Rowling became a teacher and began to write the books that inspired the $21 billion franchise.

jodipicoultContemporary bestselling author Jodi Picoult has approximately 14 million copies of her books in print worldwide. She began her career at Princeton University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Writing as well as her Master’s in Education from Harvard University.

davidorusselDavid O. Russell, who wrote Oscar nominated scripts like SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMERICAN HUSTLE and THE FIGHTER, learned to hone his craft and perfect his writing style at Amherst College, where he majored in English.

Aaron Sorkin attended Syracuse University and received his Bachelors of Fine Art, where he learned to refine his writing style. Sorkin, as we all know, went on to write A FEW GOOD MEN, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, MONEYBALL, CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR, and THE WEST WING.

Have you noticed the air of professionalism, creative genius, and/or sophistication the writing from these seasoned pros has to it?

They’ve taken years to develop their craft through education… studying the art of character development, overarching conflicts, antagonist forces, and protagonist calls to action, etc…

But that’s not all they’ve done.

Most successful writers, especially those in Hollywood, worked their way up in the industry and learned from experience. And a lot of it!

Knowledge + Experience = Mastery

For most writers, authorship and screenwriting are both artistic pursuits and commercial ones. And those that get ahead learn to marry their voice with the realities of the market.

Yes, most successful writers have spent years developing their craft through education.

But they’ve also worked in the market trenches, gaining insights and learning from those that have successfully gone before them.

They leverage market experience with mentorship (whether they know it or not).

The successful writer is in a continuous feedback loop with their readers, their agents, their publisher, the producers they’re selling to, etc.

Whether they know it or not, they’re constantly shifting their work-product based on this continuous flow of information.

Eventually it gets to the point where an experienced writer’s creativity is in unified flow with the market forces… The two become inseparable.

But for the emerging writer, the feedback loop is sparse or doesn’t exist at all.

You’re in a catch 22 – you can’t get market information without being in the market, and you can’t get in the market without the information and feedback loop!

But you need a feedback loop! So how do you get one?

First, let me tell you what a feedback loop is not!

A feedback loop is NOT your spouse or friends telling you that you have a great story. Or a reader who says your book would make a great movie! Or a member of your peer screenwriting group telling you your script is ready.

World-renowned success psychologist, Martin Seligman, sums it up when he described it like this…

A feedback loop is only valuable and worth listening to when the person providing it embodies one or more of the following three things:

1. They’ve accomplished what you’re trying to accomplish…

2. They’ve helped others successfully accomplish what you’re trying to accomplish or…

3. They’re a world-renowned expert in the field

Everything and everyone else is just noise.

How Do You Get The Education
& Market Feedback You Need When
You’re An Industry Outsider?

Well you could take path #1: Go back to school and get a degree in writing and then work your way up, learning from your mentors a long the way… like the writers we discussed earlier.

And that’s not a bad choice. But it’s not a realistic one for most.

Unless of course you have $200K laying around for college/grad school (or want the student loan debt)…

AND have 5 years to intern and work your way up in the publishing or entertainment industries.

BUT… you also need to assess what’s likely to happen if you do nothing…

…You’ll unlikely get your story up to a level that sets it a part from the millions of other stories out there…

…You’ll never cross the finish line and get your story out in the world as it was meant to be shared…

…You’ll continue writing query letter after query letter only to be rejected again and again by publishers, agents and producers…

…Your years of writing will be wasted since you’ll never attain the creative career and notoriety you deserve.

None of this is what I want for you…

Which is why I’ve been working tirelessly to create a new path… one devoted to helping you elevate your writing craft to a professional level, and marry your voice with what the market is craving…

Here’s A Full Breakdown Of What
You’ll Get From The “Storycraft Method”
Coaching Program

5x 1 Hour Training Sessions

The course will be broken up into 5 hour-long trainings, online and from the comfort of your own home.

The StoryCraft Method features 5 lessons with 11 key questions to work through…

Lesson 1: Laying the Foundation

A great book or script needs a strong foundation.  In Lesson 1 we focus on honing your story into a compelling and scalable log line and discuss genre and stakes.  We'll also nail down the Central Idea, which is different from the log line but just as critical.

Lesson 1 Questions:
- Do you know what your story is about?
- How are you honoring or subverting your genre?
-What is the Central Idea?
-What is at stake in the story?

Lesson 2:  Character Building Part 1

You can have the best plot in the world, but it's nothing without interesting and relatable characters.   In Lesson 2 we'll add flesh and bones to your Central Character(s) and identify their Conscious and Unconscious Desires – and also what burdens them.

Lesson 2 Questions:
-Who is the Central Character(s) and what is their Conscious and Unconscious Desire?
-What is the Central Character’s Fatal Flaw?

Lesson 3: Character Building Part 2

No story can exist without conflict (no good one anyway).  Here we'll discuss the Antagonistic Forces – both human and otherwise – who conspire against your Central Character, but also the allies, mentors and BFFs who assist them on their journey.

Lesson 3 Questions:
-What is the Antagonistic Force(s)?

Lesson 4: Story Benchmarks Part 1

The journey begins!  In Lesson 4 we'll identify and perfect the Call to Action and put up the tentpoles of the central plot.

Lesson 4 Questions:
-What is the Call to Action?
-What is the Overarching Conflict?

Lesson 5:  Story Benchmarks Part 2

The end is near!  In our final lesson, we'll talk about rising tension, crashing low points, critical tests, and how to deliver a rousing climax.

Lesson 5 Questions:
-What is the Central Character’s Lowest Point?
-What is the Critical Test?

Valuable StoryCraft Method Home-Study Worksheets

Each session will be accompanied by a home-study worksheet that will challenge you to apply the elements that were discussed to your own story crafting.  For example, the worksheet for Session 1 will inspire you to write your Logline and Central Idea.  Session 2's worksheet will focus on character building. You’ll be able to use these worksheets for every project you create in the future.

Here’s What Others Are Saying
About Aaron and Our Training Programs!

"Absolutely invaluable!  Masterfully considered advice not just for screenwriters, but novelists and any storyteller.  If you ask yourself the 11 Fundamental Questions, you’ll nail it!"

W. Bruce Cameron, New York Times bestselling author of A Dog’s Purpose and 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter

"Aaron Mendelsohn’s 11 Questions is possibly the most profoundly simple path of inquiry a writer can take when breaking or revising story. If approached with rigorous inquiry and honesty, the answers bring brilliant clarity to character, conflict, plot, theme, and other core story elements. My students have returned to Aaron's 11 Questions again and again in the process of developing and writing their scripts — with spectacular results."

Scott Sturgeon, Director, M.F.A. Screenwriting Program, California State University, Northridge

"Turning the miasmic gush of impulse into a cogent flow of ideas on the page requires structured thought. Craft and art must live in equal measure if you want to make a living with words.  Mendelsohn’s method provides a crystalline framework with which to turn a dream into a story. And that’s always been money to me."

Nelson Handel, New York Times bestselling writer and James Beard Award Nominee

"I got so much guidance out of my time with Voyage, but one of the greatest lessons I learned from the course is the value of self-awareness. The tools and exercises this program offers help you zero in and fully articulate exactly what kind of artist you want to be, and what kind of projects you not only want but NEED to make. Only with this kind of understanding can you approach the marketplace with the confidence you need when you have the right project. They’re truly invested in the next generation of artists and filmmakers, from a fundamental philosophy of compassion for the artist, empathy for the struggle, and knowledge building to help you succeed. It’s rare to find a company offering these types of services that’s in business for all the right reasons. Don’t hesitate to invest in your future with Voyage as your partner."
